Happy New Year!

WAIT!? It’s 2018 already!? It feels like 2017 just started like, last month. I had to give myself a talking to last night, I need to get my life together…ASAP!!!

But, instead of organizing my life, I spent New Years with my family, I’m not big on parties, they just aren’t my scene. So instead of getting drunk, and dealing with a hangover the next day, I stuffed my face with food, slept like a baby and was good to-go the next morning. Run anyone?

Because I spent New Years with my family there were no fancy dresses, fancy decor, or camera worthy moments. Although I did eat some amazing sushi with avocado instead of fish. I also had some seaweed salad and a mint, beet and pineapple water. It was so good I forgot to take a photo!

My family is lame and everyone left by 9:00pm, so I put on some pj’s, a face mask, and pampered myself through to 2018.  Left 2017 practicing self-care, began 2018 practicing self-care. Well, i’m going to go play in the snow now, have a great page 1 to 2018!

How did you spend New Years?

Find Your Balance

While on a road trip recently I picked up a few magazines to read. No, these aren’t gossip magazines that spread unnecessary drama (although according to People, Kim and Kanye are getting divorced…again). They are a magazine called RealSimple, I got two and my life has changed.

The two issues I got were titled ‘More Calm, Less Clutter‘ and ‘Find Your Balance‘. The first has a bunch of different hacks and tips that will help you with keeping the little things that add up more in order. Like putting washi tape on everyones chargers so its easier to decipher whose is whose, or keeping a dish in your laundry room/space that you can put loose change and other smaller trinkets in that you find in pockets while you are doing laundry.

The second one is right up my street. It talks about the different ways you can change your life in order to relax in the stressful world we live in today. It also explains the science behind a lot of the things they talk about. Like how having long term stress, causing our ‘fight or flight’ mode to kick into gear constantly means that cortisol is released from your brain constantly causing weight gain in your stomach, and weakens our immune systems when exposed to it over a long period of time. It also helps with everyday things, like learning how to not stress over things like a baby crying, or get frustrated at a guy who just cut you off. It teaches and gives tips on how you can not let that control your entire day.

There is a lot I learned from reading these magazines. Simple changes in habits I do everyday that will have an impact on how I view both the world, and myself.

What annoyed you today? Was it silly looking back on it?

New Year, New Me?

Where has 2017 gone? I swear it was just the beginning of the year 2 weeks ago. The older I get, the faster the years seem to go by. But, with a new year, comes new year resolutions for most people. I usually am one of those people, this year I was supposed to star working out, travel a ton, maybe do a few spontaneous things along the way and work on my anxiety. Well… I went to the gym once for like 30 min, traveled to 2 places and due to my anxiety, didn’t leave my house unless it was a need to moment. Thinking back on this it leaves a weird feeling in my stomach and makes my brain feel oddly detached from my body.

This whole ‘new year, new me’ trend that happens around this time of year always leaves me feeling less accomplished then I had before by the end of said year. So, this year there are no new years resolutions.

2018 starts on a Monday. And most would hate that, who likes Mondays? Especially when most will probably have hangovers for the next week anyways. Well, my friends I feel like this is the perfect time the year to start, not only is it at new year, its a new week and I feel like when the beginning of my week starts good, my week tends to go by much smoother. So, why not have that for the year as well?

I’m not going to be giving myself unrealistic goals, I simply want to enjoy this year, wether thats me sitting in front of the T.V. watching Netflix for the day, working out, eating crap or eating healthy, traveling when I feel like traveling, making to-do lists or just say f*** it and sit on the couch all day, well then thats what I’m gonna do. No pressure needed.

Do you like making new years resolutions?

Winter Skin

For me personally, I have never had to worry about dry skin. I have however, always had to worry about having very oily skin. I would honestly have to re-powder my face at least 10 times a day if I wanted to keep a matte look or a perfect glow kinda look. But, this fall and winter have thrown a whirl-wind my way, and my skin has decided it wants to be dry…like really dry. I admit, I panicked at first having never had to worry about even combination or normal skin let alone dry skin, and I only owned products the would keep oil away and work to dry my skin. This meant I had to find all new skin products… which is scary as I also have the most sensitive skin when it comes to break-outs. But I think I have finally gotten a good regime to follow.

Cleanser wasn’t on the top of my list of things I thought I would need to replace, but after some reading about dry skin I realized the cleanser I was using was way to harsh for my skin now. After looking through recommendations for dry skin, I found the Soy Face Cleanser by ‘Fresh’ and after the first use I fell in love. It has the power to clean off any makeup, including eye makeup, and when i’m done it leaves my face feeling clean, without feeling stripped of natural oils in my face.
Moisturizers scare me. Having always had oily skin the idea of intentionally putting moisture on my face seemed odd. But, I new I had to do it. So, I ordered one that again wouldn’t break the bank, and also said that it would help with dark spots, and skin discolouration (something I also struggle with). OleHenriksen’s moisturizer ‘Sheer  Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer’ from their Transform line is a new staple in my skin routine and something I look forward to doing every night and morning. I also have noticed amazing results with the discolouration in my skin after using this moisturizer.

Eye Serum
At the age of 17, my mother questions me every time I put on my eye serum because ‘what wrinkles are you worrying about?’. Well I have come to the conclusion that I would rather prevent myself from getting them, then have to work twice as hard to reverse them. So while in LA this summer I treated myself and bought the ‘Hydra Beauty Micro Gel Yeux’ by Chanel eye serum. I don’t have anything to compare it to as it is the first one I have used, but I have loved it so far and haven’t found anything negative to say about it as of yet.
Face Masks
I love sheet masks. They are my favourite beauty item every. They are so mess free and are great for moisturization as you don’t wash your face afterwards, and just let all that moisture sink into your skin the whole night. I love the Sephora brand ones, as well as the Dr Jart+ and the Boscia hydrogel masks.
I’m a Carmex girl. Always have been, always will. It never fails me and never leaves my lips dryer then they were before like most do to my lips. It may not have the prettiest packaging, but it does the job better then any I have ever used.
What are your winter skin go-to’s?

My Go-To Breakfast

Winter in Canada means dark, cold mornings, and a coziness in your bed that you don’t want to leave. But lately I have found it a little easier to get myself out of bed with the promise of reheating my hot water bottle and a nice big bowl of oatmeal.

I know what your thinking… what the hell is so special about oatmeal? Well let me tell you, this oatmeal is so damn good and doesn’t take much effort to make, perfect for those extra cold mornings.
What you’ll need:
  • bowl
  • intant oatmeal
  • blueberries
  • pomegranate seeds
  • rasberries
  • ground flax seeds
  • dairy-free chocolate chips
  • almond milk

Some Favourites This Festive Week

 Favourite moment this week:

Christmas has just passed, meaning loads of food and presents. But my favourite moment this week has been seeing my entire family all together. It is rare when everyone is in the same room so these past couple days have been a treat and a half for me.

Favourite T.V. show this week:

It’s not a T.V. show, but I watched a Norwegian documentary called ‘Sweatshop’. There are 2 seasons and I’ve watched both twice today alone. In ‘Sweatshop’ a few Norwegian bloggers go on a journey to Cambodia to work and live as a local who works at the sweatshops there. It exposes the mistreatment of workers in factories run by companies like H&M and ZARA. I advise everyone to watch at least one episode, they’re only 10 minutes each.

Favourite song this week:

Although I do love Christmas songs, this week I have been listening to Sigrid’s EP ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’ and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it, honestly.

Favourite blogger:

The blog run by Anniken (one of the bloggers who was on ‘Sweatshop’. Her blog is Annijor.no and she is just a down to earth person who is very relatable. She is also the person I wish I dressed like.

Favourite other:

Hot water bottle. I honestly don’t understand how I have lived almost 18 years of my life without one. Since getting a hot water bottle on christmas morning I haven’t put it down, at all. Also an extra little add on would be a sleeping eye mask. I have to have noise to fall asleep so I leave my T.V. on but the light always bothers me, again don’t know how I lived without one.

Favourite food:

I have had an entire pan of Lasagna all to myself this week and am currently making another while writing this post. It is just such a comforting dish to me and I think I may gain 10 pounds by the end of the year at the rate I’m eating it.

What is your favourite moment this week?

Let’s Enjoy Today, eh?

Is it just me, or does it feel like this year literally started last month?

I have found myself wishing for this year it to end like never before. I’m graduating at the end of this year, meaning I have had the most stressful year yet, with the hardest classes yet.

I also find myself beginning to feel the daunting pressures of buying christmas presents for the family and the fast paced, no time for breaks family visits, which don’t get me wrong, I love, but as an extreme introvert, are very tiring and bring on the anxiety. And have me pre-planning my life out for the next 2 months.

But, as autumn is slowly coming to an end and winter approaches here in Canada, I have often found myself and my family going out for walks at our local conservation area, where I had a personal epiphany yesterday. I want to focus on the now- not the “tomorrow we go here, I have to buy presents for so and so, and don’t forget, blah, blah, blah.” I did not realize how much I truly missed when in this head space of checking off mental to-do lists.

I want to practice self-love, focus on the little things that are happening, and stop wishing for this to be over. I’m going to enjoy my last time at school, at home with my family before I move away.

This post is my personal pledge that I will not let these last 2 months be wished away, they’ll be lived like nobody’s business and I’m gonna freaking enjoy this christmas like when I was 5 years old and was clueless to the world of anxiety and stress.

Let’s enjoy today, eh?

B xx
